‘English Role play’ Scenario – Opportunity or Risk


  황금의 기회일까 (A golden opportunity) 아니면 엉뚱한 말에 배팅하고 있는 걸까 (bet on the wrong person)!  이런 uncertainty (불확실함)으로 고민해 보신적 있으시죠?  어디선가 gossip (떠도는 소문)을 들은 Yun과 Brian의 대화입니다.

What’s so special about that building?:   
간단한 문장이죠?  그러나 정작 말하려고 하면 hmm. What’s special about ~ 이 pattern을 기억하시면 활용도가 높을 듯 하네요.

It will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity:
너무 많은 hyphen(“-”)이라고요? 덕분에 멋진 형용사 “일생에 한 번 있을 만한” 이란 형용사가 되었답니다.

You are not betting on the wrong horse:
“bet on the wrong horse” 경마에서 틀린 말에 돈을 거는 것… 즉, 엉뚱한데 희망을 걸고 시간과 돈을 투자하는 것을 말하겠죠?  

Yun: The building over there is now on sale. What a golden opportunity!

(저기 저 건물 요새 가격인하라는 데요)     (너무 기막히게 좋은 기회잖아요!)

Brian: What’s so special about that building? 

(저 건물 무엇이 그렇게 특별한 가요?)

Yun: The building will be remodeled soon.

(곧 리 모델링 들어간대요)

Brian: It sounds like gossip.  There is no way to be certain.  

(떠도는 소문 같은데요)  (확인할 방법이 없잖아요) 

Yun: Whatever.  I still believe it’ll be a once-in-lifetime opportunity.

(여하간에)  (난 이게 일생일대의 기회라고 생각해요)

Brain: I hope you are not betting on the wrong horse. 

(엉뚱한 데 돈 거는 거 아니길 바래요)
