‘English Role play’ Scenario – Making an excuse for being late

Las Vegas에서 도착한 첫날, 우리의 rookie 영철은 jet leg(시차) 때문에 그 다음날에 있을 meeting에 늦을까 봐 걱정스런 맘으로 시간을 맞추고 잤지만, 다음날 늦잠을 자고(overslept) 결국 지각(late/tardy)하게 됩니다. How can he make it through?(어떻게 헤쳐나갈까요?)

-  I set my alarm clock ahead an hour : set the clock ahead 시간 :
  ~ 시계를   시간 일찍 맞춰놓다’의 뜻이며, 늦게 맞출 때는 ‘set the clock back 시간’으로 하시면 됩니다. 잠깐, 여기서 ‘go off’ 는 울리다(=ring) 의 의미.

-  I think the battery must be dead : 건전지가 죽을 순 없겠지요.
  ‘be dead’ 의 의미는 약이 다 떨어졌다 임. must는 ‘~해야만  한다’ 외에 ~임에 틀림없다라는 강한 추측을 표현할 때 쓰지요.

- It’s time to buy a new alarm clock : It’s time to 동사 ~ 할 때이다 라는 표현이지요. 동사 이하를 변형해서 사용해 보세요.

Y.C :  I’m terribly sorry to be late. I set my alarm clock ahead an hour last night, but it didn’t go off in time. (정말 늦어서 죄송합니다. 지난밤에 시간을 1 시간 일찍 맞추고 잤지만, 제시간에 울리지 않았어요.)

Ms. Henderson :  What’s wrong with your clock? (시계가 뭐가 문제에요?)

Y.C : Actually, the alarm clock went off an hour later. I think the battery must be dead.   (사실은 시계가 한 시간 늦게 울렸어요. 틀림없이 건전지 약이 다 되었을 거예요)

Ms. Henderson : Maybe. But there might be another reason. How long have you kept your clock? (그럴 수 있겠네요. 하지만, 다른 이유가 있을 수 있어요. 시계가 얼마나 오래되었죠?)

Y. C : It’s been over 10 years. I got it as a birthday gift when I was 14. (10년이 넘었어요. 제가 14살이었을 때 생일선물로 받았거든요.)

Ms. Henderson : Wow! So long.  It’s time to buy a new alarm clock.  (와우 정말 오래되었군요.  새 자명종 시계를 사야 할 때인 것 같아요.)

Y. C : I know. But I’ll wait for my 29th birthday. Who knows! I might have another birthday gift from somebody else. (알아요, 하지만 29번째 생일을 기다릴 거예요. 누가 알아요. 누군가가 생일선물로 새로 사 줄지.)

Ms. Henderson : Young-cheol! Don’t be so stingy! (영철씨! 너무 짠 것 아니야!)
