MIS분야는 학문적으로 자리를 잡아 갈 수 있을까?

경영학과에 속해있는 MIS전공이 최근에 다양한 전공 명으로 변화하고 있다. 경영정보학, e-비즈니스학, 정보시스템학, 정보경영학, 디지털학, 디지털비즈니스학 등.

그러나 다양하게 변화하는 전공명처럼 MIS자체의 정체성에 대한 의문은 끊이지 않는다. 1980년대 초반에 MIS라는 학문을 구체적으로 정립하기 위해 노력했던 산물이 본 논문이다.

 

MIS분야를 학문적으로 완성시키기 위해서 Reference disciplines(학문참고)를 명확하게 하고, MIS분야의 연구를 위한 종속변수(Dependent Variable)을 명확하게 정의하고, 전통을 축적(Cumulative Tradition)을 위해 학문적 노력을 해야 하며, MIS을 위한 기술과 사례를 만들고, 전통있고 영향력있는 MIS 저널들을 만들어야 한다고 주장한다.

 

이러한 주장이 있는지 28년이 지난 지금도 위의 노력은 계속되고 있다. 그럼에도 아직도 학문으로서 MIS의 영역은 뿌리를 내리지 못하고 있다. 학문적 노력의 일환으로 타 학문에 RD역할을 할 수 있도록 노력하고 있다. 실증연구(Positivism)가 매우 활발하게 이루어진 측면도 이러한 이유 때문일 것이다.

 

MIS연구를 하는 사람이라면, Secondary Major의 중요함은 Reference Disciplines이라고 할 정도로 필요하다. 자기만의 R.D를 구축하기 위해서 인문학적 지식과 역량은 아무리 강조해도 지나치지 않은 듯 하다.

 

또한 MIS연구자로서 나만의 Research Field을 구축하는 것이 선행되어야 할 점이다. MIS의 학문적 성과를 축적하여 하나의 전통으로 만들어가는 것뿐만 아니라, 나의 전공분야를 구현하고 이를 통해 다양한 IS 이슈들과 경영 이슈를 풀어가는 현업과 이론이 함께 살아가는 연구자로서의 자세가 MIS에 가장 맞는 것은 아닐까. 나에게 가장 잘 맞는 연구분야의 선정 바로 그것이다.

 

최근의 변화하는 학문적 환경에서 더욱 본 논문의 내용이 와 닿는 건 MIS분야에서 일을 하고 공부하는 한 사람으로서 나의 career 와 Job에 대한 미래의 고민과 맞닿아 있다.
