A Meta Synthesis of Research in the Korean Journal of MIS Research from 1998 to 2007
Abstract
[Jungi Park, Jungwoo Lee, Jungin Yeon]
Successful development and implementation of information systems and technologies (IS/IT) is a critical concern in IS/IT research. Many studies have been conducted to identify factors that influence the ‘successful’ IS/IT, and the success of IS/IT were measured via a variety of constructs and variables from different perspectives, such as usage rates, satisfaction of users, cost savings, etc. A decade ago, through a literature review of researches published in international journals, DeLone and McLean developed a ‘success’ model of IS/IT, and this study had attracted strong attentions from academic community. However, as their literature review only covers articles written in English and mostly from USA, their model may not reflect views from other cultures and countries, such as Korea.
In the regard, this study is designed to methodologically replicate what DeLone and McLean had been done with the academic publications in Korea. Through a literature review of 367 articles published in the Korean Journal of MIS Research ten-year period between 1998 and 2007, 65 studies were identified as the ones that uses ‘success’ of IS/IT and 367 constructs were surfaced as the surrogate of the ‘success’, Subsequent clustering analysis revealed eight primary dimensions of IS/IT Success – IS Quality, IS Use, Information Value and Behavior, Satisfaction, Process Optimization, Relationship Improvement, Financial Performance and Strategic Positioning. Relationships among these ‘success’ dimensions were posited with in-depth discussion about the possible cultural and social differences compared to DeLone and McLean Model.
This study has been conducted against DeLone & McLean(1992,2003)’s Successful Model and offers couple of suggestions. First, while DeLone & McLean differentiate, information quality, system quality and service quality, this new model suggests integrate construct of ‘quality’ consisted into one main IT system.
Second, this study suggests that the model was developed on the bases of Korean Culture's information values and activity. Third, whether the development is for personal or organizational, IT outcomes after IT Use is defined as dimensions of Process Optimization, Relationship Improvement, Financial Performance and Strategic Positioning.
There are three significant administrative implications for the practice community. First, before IT system development, our success model is used as ROI Model with Korea's ‘success’. The key consideration of current ROI's indicators is financial indicator, however this study suggests additional variables reflecting regional process optimizing and strategic positioning. Second, this study will suggest successful and appropriate selection to complete the project and evaluation tool. This provides upcoming researchers with a bird’s eye view of possible IT evaluation models and an understanding of their practical mindset Third, construct an IT service quality in place. Resulting from this study, IT systems suggest considering potential growth and use it as a measuring tool.
Considering all the results, this study still has limitations. First, this study analyzed only one journal - “Asian Pacific journal of Information systems”, so there's a limit to say that this study is for the whole. Further more, there's a need for additional research with Korea’s Value in consideration. Addition, his study use Delone&McLean(1992)’s Methodology, there is no items to measure IT Success. researchers must take a step further and apply rigorous success measurement methods to create comprehensive, replicable, and informative measures of IS success.
